We’re pleased to announce that Virtru has been selected as a finalist for the 2015 SXSW Interactive Innovation Awards, in the new category of Privacy & Security.
We’re honored to have our contribution to online privacy and security recognized by such a knowledgeable, forward thinking body. But we’re even more thrilled by what this means for
awareness of privacy issues.
SXSW and the Digital Public Make Privacy a Priority
Last year, South by Southwest surprised festival goers and the general public with a teleconference with Edward Snowden, making international headlines. The discussion was a call to arms to fix the problem of Internet privacy, and set a conference precedent to emphasize the issues of digital surveillance and security. SXSW 2014 also recognized Online Privacy and Security as the “Breakout Digital Trend,” and in 2015, Privacy & Security became an award category for the first time.
If there’s one lesson we can take from 2014, it’s that the online world is facing a breaking point in data security and privacy. Between the Snowden leaks, which brought the reality of digital surveillance to the attention of the general public, and high-profile data breaches like the infamous Sony Pictures hack, people are getting wise to the vulnerability of their online property. Even the Internet Architecture Board is urging for further integration of data encryption into the fabric of the Internet.
One of the major points Snowden has emphasized since he blew the whistle on digital surveillance is the importance of email encryption. With the selection of Virtru as an Innovation Award Finalist, the SXSW judges found Virtru to be an innovative way to make this capability available to everyone.
Nobody is going to stop sending email, storing data in the cloud or sharing information via social media any time soon — nor should they. The digital world is increasingly becoming a place we call home. It provides a platform for doing business, forging relationships and challenging the status quo.
Innovation Bridges Gap Between Privacy and Convenience
There is tremendous opportunity for tech firms, developers and programmers to make the digital world a safer place, and to restore the principle of privacy. That’s why Virtru has made it so much easier to use client-side email encryption to protect the privacy of your personal and business email. Security should not come at the expense of convenience.
