Product Support & FAQ

How does the secure reader work? Since it’s hosted at http://virtru.com, doesn’t this mean Virtru is storing the content?

The Secure Reader is another client-side platform, much like our browser extension and Outlook plugin. All of the cryptographic operations (i.e. decrypt for the recipient) still happen client-side on the recipient's systems because our crypto libraries are built in javascript, which runs in the user’s browser.Attachments are stored in one of several cloud storage platforms (currently Amazon S3), but because that content gets encrypted before it is transmitted to that storage location, Virtru still does not have access to the content, and that content is decrypted on the recipient system only after a successful authentication/authorization.These details apply to attachments being both read and sent via the Secure Reader.
