 WASHINGTON–(Marketwired)– [Virtru,](https://www.virtru.com/) a trusted provider of data privacy and encryption to more than 4,000 organizations around the world, today announced that the State of Maryland is using its platform to secure sensitive information in the cloud. With Virtru, more than 15,000 state employees are able to move their email to the cloud with Google while maintaining high levels of compliance, security, and data privacy.

Initially adopted by the State of Maryland to meet strict Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) regulations, Virtru is now broadly deployed to meet a variety of state security needs, including protection of personal health information regulated by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Before implementing Virtru, many state workers were forced to stick with cumbersome, on-premise systems in order to meet regulatory requirements. Now, as a result of Virtru’s unique ability to meet strict government regulations, the state is able to take full advantage of their Google Cloud investment. Departments and agencies can now share sensitive information via email, while retaining the ability to revoke, expire, and control forwarding for their messages. In addition, confidential information sent to colleagues, other agencies, and jurisdictions remains private, audit-ready, and protected.

Now we’re using it to meet CJIS and HIPAA requirements and protect the privacy of our citizens statewide.”

Built on the Trusted Data Format (TDF) using 256-bit AES, client-side encryption, Virtru protects data at the time of creation and throughout its lifespan — regardless of where it’s shared. Virtru integrates with the email services that agencies already use every day, like Google Cloud, Gmail, and Outlook, providing a means of encrypting data before it is stored by any cloud provider. Encryption keys stay resident in the United States and in the control only of cleared U.S. citizens. The company’s innovations and patented technologies include full-text search of encrypted content and the ability to use existing identity for authentication — ensuring that customers no longer need to trade privacy for convenience.
