Virtru was incorporated 10 years ago today, on November 11, 2011. Over that time, we’ve protected billions of emails and files; served millions of individuals and thousands of customers; and exponentially grown our team of passionate, creative, and hardworking Virtruvians.
Even though we’re celebrating 10 years in business, we’re just getting started: Virtru’s powerful data protection solutions are accelerating in many ways — expanding across the entire Google ecosystem, safeguarding data across large enterprises, expanding use cases for the Trusted Data Format (TDF) to sophisticated and challenging edge environments, and much more.
A lot has changed since we started our journey to bring intuitive, easy-to-use encryption solutions to the world. But there are some things that haven’t changed:
Our mission: To help our customers unlock the power of their data by creating a world where it is always under your control — everywhere.
Our ability to fulfill that mission has strengthened over the years. Virtru started as an email plugin, but we’ve expanded to provide robust data protection for data in an array of scenarios — from satellite data to biometric sensors, to enterprise data flows through Google Cloud and SaaS apps like Salesforce and Zendesk.
We believe that privacy is a human right that must be protected.
As more and more of our lives move to the digital space, the right to privacy is often diminished by companies that profit off of user data. We believe that data privacy should be baked into every company’s strategy from the start. We believe that individuals should maintain control over their own information — and reserve the right to change their mind over who can access their data at any time.
The foundation of all our products has always been the Trusted Data Format (TDF).
Created by our Co-Founder and CTO, Will Ackerly, the Trusted Data Format is central to Virtru’s mission and vision — it facilitates the flexibility, control, and trust that our products are known for. As we celebrate Virtru’s 10th anniversary, we’re proud that the TDF has been the basis for so much innovation across the public and private sectors over the past decade, with many more exciting implementations still underway.
We prioritize ease of use for our encryption tools.
User experience is everything when it comes to reinforcing strong security behaviors across an organization. If you’re requiring your employees to jump through hoops to protect their data, you’re unlikely to see strong results. What our customers love about our product is that it’s easy. End users don’t need much training, because data protection is as simple as a blue toggle button right within their Microsoft or Google email and file sharing tools.
We innovate at high velocity.
One great thing about the Trusted Data Format is that it’s endlessly versatile — and our teams are continually refining and expanding its capabilities across industries and use cases, helping enterprises, governments, and organizations of all sizes protect their data in a way that works for their business.
Data privacy and security are for everyone.
Whether you own a coffee shop, teach at an elementary school, or run a Fortune 500 enterprise, you need to protect the important data that’s been entrusted to you: Payroll information, home addresses, social security numbers, health records, and many more. It’s not an exaggeration to say that people’s livelihoods and well-being depend on it.
If you want to scale a startup, you have to hire incredible people.
Virtru’s team consists of smart, driven, engaged people who share a passion for our mission, and a commitment to our customers. We wouldn’t be where we are today — releasing powerful products, expanding data protection into even the toughest edge scenarios, and helping our customers securely scale up their businesses — if it weren’t for our devoted team members.
On Virtru’s 10th anniversary, we celebrate our current and former teammates, customers, board members, investors, and partners that have brought our organization to where it is today. And we’re just getting started. Cheers to 10 years!
